Happy Haymarket Riot Day!
May Day, or International Worker's Day, began with the Haymarket Riot on May 4, 1886, in Chicago, Illinois. It began as a peaceful rally at Haymarket Square near the corner of Randolph Street and Desplaines Street in what was later called Chicago's west Loop.
The eight-hour work day was the prime rallying call and the event almost passed without incident until a fuse-bomb was lit and hurled into the square, killing a police officer. Cops opened fire on the crowd and before it was all over 11 were dead.
Let the celebrations ensue!
